Take a look at the headlines in this & other areas here at DD area XX. Nowadays they're all just text based, but used to be Flash files with dynamic text & before that - images dynamically generated by a font engine called "Sigmund".
The man behind this feature is Rasmus Andersson (flajm.com). Based on a font made by Rasmus, I developed a new emboldened version for this engine. Everything from the engine to the specific fonts are written in PHP.
